Aggies Finish In 13th-Place At PING Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah - Utah State's men's golf team finished in 13th-place at the PING Cougar Classic, hosted by BYU, here on Saturday with a 54-hole total of 889 after finishing the tournament by shooting a 299. USU opened play on Friday with rounds of 297 and 293.

New Mexico State won the 14-team tournament with a score of 847, while BYU was second at 858. Boise State's Troy Merritt took top individual honors as he shot an eight-under 208 (70-68-70).

Junior Toph Peterson (Logan, Utah) led Utah State as he finished tied for 22nd with a one-over par 217. Peterson began play with back-to-back 73's before carding a one-under 71 in his final round on Saturday. It is the first time this year that Peterson has been USU's top finisher.

After shooting a four-over 76 in his first round on Friday, junior Tyler Labrum (Roosevelt, Utah) bounced back with back-to-back rounds of 71 to finish in tie for 26th with a two-over 218. Junior Devin Daniels (Hyde Park, Utah) finished tied for 57th with an eight-over 224 after opening the tournament with a one-under 71, before shooting a three-over 75 on Friday afternoon and a six-over 78 on Saturday.

Also competing for Utah State was junior Jeremy Pack (Salt Lake City, Utah) and freshman Dan Heath (Smithfield, Utah) who finished in 75th and 76th place with scores of 235 and 236, respectively.

Utah State will return to action on Monday, April 28 when it travels to San Jose, Calif., to compete in the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championships. The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days, with 18-holes being played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
