John Strang Tabbed America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete Of The Week
May 5, 2008
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State track and field athlete John Strang has been tabbed the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, May 4, it was announced on Monday. The award is voted on by a state media panel. Strang, a junior from Hawthorne, N.J. (Hawthorne HS), competed in three events Friday at the Boise State Bronco Twilight meet, nabbing two second-place finishes and a sixth-place finish. He had a high jump clearance of 6-10.75, an NCAA regional qualifying mark and clearing the same height as the winner, but got second on earlier misses. The 6-10.75 is not only a personal-best but ties the ninth-best mark in school history. It matches the best mark in the Western Athletic Conference as Friday's winner was from Boise State. Strang also got second in the 110 meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.67. He was also sixth in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 23-7.50. This is the second USU Athlete of the Week honor for Strang this season, after nabbing the award on March 3. He received that honor after he broke the Utah State and WAC records in winning the conference title in the heptathlon with 5,506 points to lead the Aggies to the men's WAC Indoor Championship. Strang is the third USU men's track and field team member in a row to garner the weekly award after junior distance runner Seth Wold received the accolade last week and junior jumper Blake Hadfield earned the honor the prior week. On the year, this is the fifth USU Athlete of the Week Award for the Aggie men's track and field team after Nick Karren (Feb. 11) and Strang (March 3) earned the accolade during indoor competition. Strang will join his Aggie men's and women's track and field teammates in competing in the Utah Collegiate Challenge on Wednesday, May 7 at Salt Lake City, hosted by Utah, which is USU's final tune-up before the WAC Championships, Wednesday-Saturday, May 14-17 at Boise, Idaho. Strang is the defending conference champion in the decathlon, which begins on Wednesday, May 14. Nominees from other sports included: WOMEN'S TRACK - Freshman Sonia Grabowska (Warsaw, Poland) placed fourth in the pole vault at the Boise State Twilight meet with a personal-best height of 13-1.50, which is an NCAA regional qualifying mark and the third-best mark in the WAC this year. That jump also ranks as the second-best in school history. MEN'S GOLF - Junior Devin Daniels (Hyde Park, Utah) finished 19th individually to lead Utah State at the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championships as the Aggies tied for eighth as a team. Daniels, who finished the tournament with a 16-over par 232, began play with a two-over 74 before concluding the tournament with rounds of 78 and 80. SOFTBALL - Sophomore center fielder Emily Reilly (Portland, Ore.) led the Aggies at Hawai'i last weekend, as she hit .500 (4-8) in the series. Reilly posted a slugging percentage of .625 and an on-base percentage of .556 during the three games as she went two-for-three in the Aggies' 5-2 loss on Saturday with a run scored, and went two-for-three in game three.
