Strang Tabbed America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's track and field athlete John Strang has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, March 2, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state media panel. Strang, a junior from Hawthorne, N.J. (Hawthorne HS), broke the Utah State and Western Athletic Conference records in winning the conference title in the heptathlon with 5,506 points to lead the Aggies to the men's WAC Indoor Championship. Strang's NCAA provisional qualifying mark also broke the WAC meet record set just last year, as he won five of the seven events. Just 20 minutes after the completion of the heptathlon on Friday, Strang turned around and placed second in the high jump with a height of 6-9.00 (2.06m). On Saturday, Strang also set new season bests with a time of 7.00 in the 60 m dash to place fourth and an 8.30 for sixth in the 60 m hurdles. Overall, Strang's four finishes in top six earned him all-WAC honors in each event and accounted for a total of 23 points, helping USU to 179 points in winning the team title. Strang also won the WAC Championship in the decathlon at last year's conference outdoor championships. This is Strang's first career USU Athlete of the Week Award. Strang and the Aggie track and field teams will head to Seattle, Wash., next Saturday, March 8 for the Last Chance Meet, hosted by the University of Washington, the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., March 14-15 hosted by the University of Arkansas. Nominees from other sports included: MEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior All-American guard Jaycee Carroll (Evanston, Wyo.) led Utah State to an easy 86-59 win against Louisiana Tech as he scored 30 points to go along with five rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist. Carroll, who notched 30 points for the fifth time this year and ninth time in his career, scored 24 of his points in the second-half and finished the game by shooting 13-20 (.650) from the field. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior forward Jenny Gross (Caldwell, Idaho) scored a team-high 14 points and pulled down five rebounds in Utah State's 62-47 loss at Louisiana Tech. In the game, she shot 50.0 percent from the field (6-12) and 100.0 percent from the free throw line (2-2). GYMNASTICS - Junior Nicole Simoneau (Manchester, N.H.) was Utah State's only event winner as she tied her season-best on the bars with a 9.850 in USU's 195.250-192.300 loss to 13th-ranked Denver. It was the sixth time this year she has won or shared top honors on the bars. MEN'S TENNIS - Senior Jonas Tyden (Stockholm, Sweden) recorded a 2-1 record at No. 4 singles for Utah State as the Aggies defeated Idaho State (4-3) and lost to Weber State (6-1) and UNLV (5-2) last week. Tyden recorded a straight sets win against ISU, before losing in three sets against WSU. He then notched a come-from-behind 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) win against UNLV. Tyden also teamed with freshman Jakob Asplund to record a 1-2 record at No. 1 doubles during the week. WOMEN'S TENNIS - Junior Bridgette Strickland (Orem, Utah) was Utah State's top performer against Nevada, as the Aggies fell, 7-0. In the match, Strickland lost a straight sets match to Florence De Vrye, 7-5, 6-3. WOMEN'S TRACK - Junior Krista Larson (Kaysville, Utah) broke the school indoor record in the 20-pound weight throw as she placed second at the WAC Championships with a toss of 58' 5.75" (17.82m), bettering her season-best by over eight feet, in leading the Utah State women to a fourth-place finish. 2007-08 Utah State Athlete of the Week Winners |
