USU Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Arizona Willie Williams Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. - Utah State track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the Willie Williams Classic hosted by the University of Arizona, Friday and Saturday, March 21-22 with three individual winners in Tucson, Ariz.

On the women's side, senior Stacie Lifferth (Dorius) took first-place, and posted an NCAA qualifying provisional mark, in the women's 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:46.61 while junior Vanessa Hawkins recorded a time of 11:14.01 to finish in third-place. Junior Katie Thatcher won the 400m hurdles in 1:01.30 and freshman Camille Fehlberg took third with a time of 1:02.62. Sophomore Krista Larson also placed third in the hammer throw with a distance of 171-5.

The women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams both finished in fourth-place. The 4x100m relay team (sophomore Ashlee Cannon, freshman Kimiko Kamo, freshman Katelyn Jensen and sophomore Brittany Chadwick) recorded a time of 47.39 and the 4x400m relay team (Fehlberg, Jensen, Thatcher and sophomore Elaine Connolly) had a time of 3:51.74.

Sophomore Steve Strickland won the 3,000m steeplechase for the men with a time of 9:16.50 and junior John Strang took third-place in the high jump with a height of 2.00m. Senior Dasheek Akwenye placed third in the 400m and recorded a time of 47.24. The men's 4x100m relay team, which included Strang, Akwenye, freshman Silas Pimentel and senior Lamar Brown, finished second with a time of 41.35.

Three other Aggie men had an impressive showing as they placed fourth and fifth in their respective events. Sophomore Jason Holt took fourth-place in the 1,500m with a time of 3:53.31 and Pimentel also placed fourth in the 100m with a time of 10.66. Junior Keith Williams finished the 400m in 53.69 to claim fifth-place.

The Aggie track and field teams will continue action Friday, April 4 in Provo, Utah as they compete in the Brigham Young Invitational.
