WEEKLY AGGIE UPDATE - MARCH 23, 2008 Utah State (24-11, 12-4) concluded its 2007-08 season with a 61-57 loss at Illinois State in the first round of the 2008 MasterCard NIT. It was the ninth straight year that USU participated in postseason play (5-NCAA, 4-NIT) and the ninth straight year it has won at least 23 games. Against the Redbirds, senior All-American guard Jaycee Carroll had a game-high 15 points, while junior forward Gary Wilkinson recorded his seventh double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Senior forward Stephen DuCharme and freshman guard Pooh Williams also scored in double-figures with 10 points each. USU shot 44.9 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from three-point range, while ISU shot 40.4 percent overall and 39.1 percent from behind the arc. During the season, Utah State was led by Carroll who averaged 22.4 points and 6.0 rebounds and shot 52.6 percent from the field, 49.8 percent from three-point range and 91.9 percent from the free throw line, while Wilkinson averaged 13.3 points and 7.0 rebounds and shot 58.4 percent from the field and 81.5 percent from the free throw line and freshman forward Tai Wesley averaged 9.9 points and 4.5 rebounds and shot 63.5 percent from the field and 72.2 percent from the free throw line. As a team, USU averaged 73.9 points and shot 51.4 percent from the field, 40.1 percent from three-point range and 79.2 percent from the free throw line, while its opponents scored 68.1 points and shot 43.8 percent from the field, 36.5 percent from three-point range and 69.8 percent from the free throw line. MEN'S GOLF Contact: Doug Hoffman - (435) 797-3714 Utah State's men's golf team will return to action this week as it competes in the Cuesta Vista Intercollegiate in Arroyo Grande, Calif., on Thursday and Friday, March 27-28. In its last competition on March 3-4, Utah State finished in 13th-place at the Braveheart Classic in Beaumont, Calif., as it concluded the 54-hole tournament with a team score of 944 (328-309-307). Junior Devin Daniels led Utah State as he finished tied for 41st with a 19-over par 235 (80-79-76). It is the fourth time in six tournaments this year that Daniels has been USU's top finisher. Senior Jeremy Pack shot a three-over 75 in the final round to finish in a tie for 57 with a 22-over par 238. Freshman Toph Peterson tied for 62nd with a score of 239, while freshmen Tyler Labrum and Tyler Munson tied for 79th and 83rd with scores of 244 and 245, respectively. GYMNASTICS Contact: Zach Fisher - (435) 797-2066 Utah State's gymnastics team (5-14, 2-6) will travel to Boise, Idaho this weekend to compete in the WAC Championships on Saturday, March 29 at 6 p.m., in Taco Bell Arena. USU concluded its regular season last weekend with a 195.075-193.150 home loss to Southern Utah. The Aggies began the meet with a 48.575 on the vault, followed by a 48.225 on bars, a 47.725 on beam, and a 48.625 on floor. USU had four individual winners on the night highlighted by senior Megan Tschida who tallied a season-best 9.900 on floor, which is the fourth-highest score in school history. USU's freshmen also posted some big scores on the night, as Nicole Simoneau won the bars with a career-best 9.900, which is the fourth-highest score in USU history, while sophomore Heather Heinrich and freshman Jasmine Minion tied for first on vault along with SUU's Elise Wheeler, as each gymnast posted a 9.800. OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD Contact: Zach Fisher - (435) 797-2066 Utah State's outdoor track and field teams will take the week off before returning to action on Friday, April 4 at the Brigham Young Invitational. Last weekend, Utah State had three individual winners at the Arizona hosted Willie Williams Invitational in its first outdoor meet of the season. On the women's side, senior Stacie Lifferth (Dorius) took first-place, and posted an NCAA qualifying provisional mark in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:46.61, while junior Vanessa Hawkins recorded a time of 11:14.01 to finish in third-place. Junior Katie Thatcher won the 400m hurdles in 1:01.30 and freshman Camille Fehlberg took third with a time of 1:02.62. Sophomore Krista Larson also placed third in the hammer throw with a distance of 171-5. The women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams both finished in fourth-place. The 4x100m relay team (sophomore Ashlee Cannon, freshman Kimiko Kamo, freshman Katelyn Jensen and sophomore Brittany Chadwick) recorded a time of 47.39 and the 4x400m relay team (Fehlberg, Jensen, Thatcher and sophomore Elaine Connolly) had a time of 3:51.74. Sophomore Steve Strickland won the 3,000m steeplechase for the men with a time of 9:16.50 and junior John Strang took third-place in the high jump with a height of 6-6.75. Senior Dasheek Akwenye placed third in the 400m and recorded a time of 47.24. The men's 4x100m relay team, which included Strang, Akwenye, freshman Silas Pimentel and senior Lamar Brown, finished second with a time of 41.35. Sophomore Jason Holt took fourth-place in the 1,500m with a time of 3:53.31, and Pimentel also placed fourth in the 100m with a time of 10.66. Junior Keith Williams finished the 400m in 53.69 to claim fifth-place. MEN'S TENNIS Contact: Ashley McWilliams - (435) 797-1361 Utah State's men's tennis team (4-11) will have a month off before returning to action on Wednesday, April 9 at Weber State. During its last competition it defeated Montana State-Billings, 7-0, and then lost to Montana State, 4-3. Sophomore Oscar Ericsson led Utah State during the week as he notched a 2-0 record at No. 2 singles, winning both of his matches in straight sets. He also teamed with senior Fernando Gallegos to notch a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles. Senior Jonas Tyden and Gallegos were also 2-0 in singles play. USU also had three players go 1-1 during the week in junior Matt Braithwaite, sophomore Matt Searle and freshman Jakob Asplund. WOMEN'S TENNIS Contact: Ashley McWilliams - (435) 797-1361 Utah State's women's tennis team (4-9) will return to action this week as it hosts Dixie State on Friday, March 28 and Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, March 29 at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club. During its last competition, USU defeated Montana State-Billings, 6-1, and Portland State, 4-3, and lost to Montana State, 4-3. Sophomore Marie Livingston led USU during the week as she went 3-0 at No. 6 singles, winning all three of her matches in straight sets. Sophomore Brianna Harris notched a 2-1 record at No. 1 singles, while freshman Hailey Swenson went 3-0 at No. 2 singles. USU also had three players go 1-2 during the week as junior Bridgette Strickland competed at No. 3 singles, sophomore Britney Watts played at No. 4 singles, and freshman Taylor Perry was at No. 5 singles. SOFTBALL Contact: Ashley McWilliams - (435) 797-1361 Utah State's softball team (3-17, 0-3) will have another busy week as it plays a doubleheader at Utah Valley on Tuesday, March 25, before opening its home season on Wednesday, March 26 with a doubleheader against Utah. USU will then host WAC foe Fresno State on Friday and Saturday, March 28-29, as the two teams will play one game Friday and two on Saturday. Last week, Utah State played five games, losing to South Dakota State, 2-1, and Brigham Young, 15-4, before being swept at Nevada by scores of 12-1, 6-0, and 7-2. Sophomore center fielder Emily Reilly led Utah State last week as she hit .357 (5-of-14) with a triple and two runs, while walking twice. In the first game of a three-game series at Nevada, she scored a run and walked twice, and in the final game, she was 3-of-4 at the plate. For the week, Reilly had a .750 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage, to go along with a perfect fielding percentage. As a team, Utah State is hitting .216 on the season as compared to a .355 batting average for its opponents. USU also has a team ERA of 6.76 this year, while its opponents ERA is 2.41. |
